What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a form of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) caused by a direct blow to the head or a sudden jolt that forces the brain to move rapidly within the skull. This movement can stretch and damage brain cells, disrupt chemical signaling, and trigger an inflammatory response that impairs normal brain function.

Neuroinflammation and Immune Activation – The brain responds to injury by releasing pro-inflammatory molecules (cytokines, chemokines, and reactive oxygen species) that increase swelling and disrupt normal neuronal communication.

New Project.png

Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Energy Crisis – Brain energy production relies on mitochondria, but after a concussion, ATP (cellular energy) levels drop, leading to fatigue, slow processing speed, and cognitive fog.

Despite being labeled "mild," concussions can lead to significant neurological effects that impact memory, concentration, mood, energy levels, and sleep patterns. While many individuals recover within a few weeks, others experience persistent symptoms that last for months or even years, a condition known as Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS).

What Happens to the Brain During a Concussion?

New Project.png

Neurotransmitter Imbalance – Disruptions in dopamine, serotonin, glutamate, and GABA levels affect mood, emotional regulation, memory, and sleep cycles.

New Project.png

Reduced Cerebral Blood Flow – Blood flow to the brain can drop by 30-50% post-concussion, leading to decreased oxygen and nutrient delivery, further delaying healing.

A concussion initiates a complex cascade of biological events that temporarily impair the brain’s ability to function. These disruptions can include:

Breakdown of the Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) – The protective barrier that shields the brain from toxins becomes more permeable, increasing the risk of chronic inflammation and neurological dysfunction.

Common Symptoms
of a Concussion

Concussions affect multiple brain systems, leading to a wide range of symptoms that can persist for days, weeks, or even months.

New Project (2).png

Cognitive Impairments: Brain fog, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, slower processing speed.

New Project (2).png

Physical Symptoms: Headaches, dizziness, nausea, light and noise sensitivity, fatigue.

New Project (2).png

Emotional and Behavioral Changes: Anxiety, depression, irritability, mood swings.

New Project (2).png

Sleep Disruptions: Insomnia, excessive drowsiness, frequent waking during the night.

Some individuals recover within 1-2 weeks, while others develop persistent symptoms that require targeted intervention to resolve.

How ConcussionCare+ Supports
Brain Recovery

Recovery from a concussion requires the brain to regain chemical balance, repair damaged neural pathways, restore energy production, and reduce inflammation. ConcussionCare+ is specifically designed to support these biological processes, helping the brain heal more efficiently and completely.

Reducing Neuroinflammation

Following a concussion, the brain’s immune response activates microglia, specialized immune cells that release pro-inflammatory cytokines. While this response is necessary for initial healing, prolonged or excessive inflammation can worsen symptoms and delay recovery.

Neuroinflammation has been linked to brain fog, chronic headaches, mental fatigue, and increased sensitivity to stimuli. If left unchecked, it may contribute to long-term cognitive dysfunction.

New Project (3).png

Help regulate immune activation to prevent excessive inflammation without impairing necessary healing responses

New Project.png

Support the resolution of inflammation to allow for a smooth transition into the repair phase.

New Project.png

Protect against oxidative damage caused by excessive immune overactivation.

New Project.png

Protecting Against
Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress occurs when free radicals overwhelm the brain’s natural antioxidant defenses, leading to neuronal damage and prolonged recovery times. After a concussion, oxidative stress can:

New Project.png

Damage brain cell membranes, increasing the risk of prolonged symptoms.

New Project.png

Interfere with mitochondrial function, further worsening fatigue and mental fog.

New Project.png

Disrupt neurotransmitter regulation, contributing to emotional instability and cognitive dysfunction.

ConcussionCare+ helps to:

New Project.png

Support the brain’s antioxidant defense systems, neutralizing free radicals.

New Project.png

Promote cellular resilience, allowing neurons to function optimally.

Restoring Brain Energy &
Mitochondrial Function

The brain consumes over 20% of the body’s total energy, making it one of the most metabolically demanding organs. After a concussion, neurons struggle to produce ATP, the body’s main source of cellular energy. This energy deficit results in:

New Project (2).png

Mental exhaustion and difficulty concentrating.

New Project (2).png

Slower cognitive processing and reduced reaction times.

New Project (2).png

Increased sensitivity to mental and physical exertion.

ConcussionCare+ is designed to:

New Project (2).png

Support mitochondrial ATP production, restoring normal energy levels.

New Project (2).png

Enhance cerebral metabolism, allowing neurons to recover efficiently.

New Project (2).png

Improve mental clarity and focus, reducing post-concussion brain fog.

Regulating
Neurotransmitter
Balance

Concussions can disrupt neurotransmitter signaling, leading to

New Project.png

Mood swings, irritability, and emotional sensitivity.

New Project.png

Sleep disturbances, anxiety, and heightened stress response.

New Project.png

Difficulty with focus, memory recall, and cognitive endurance.

These disruptions occur due to an imbalance of dopamine, serotonin, glutamate, and GABA, key neurotransmitters responsible for cognitive function, mood stability, and sleep cycles.

ConcussionCare+ helps:

New Project.png

Promote healthy neurotransmitter balance, reducing emotional instability.

New Project.png

Support relaxation and cognitive performance, aiding stress management.

New Project.png

Optimize brain communication pathways, improving memory and focus.

Strengthening the
Blood-Brain Barrier
(BBB)

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a crucial defense mechanism that protects brain tissue from harmful substances. However, after a concussion, the BBB can become compromised, allowing unwanted inflammatory molecules and toxins to enter.

This increased permeability has been linked to chronic post-concussion symptoms, brain fog, and neurodegenerative conditions.

ConcussionCare+ helps to:

New Project.png

Support blood-brain barrier integrity, preventing further neurological stress.

New Project.png

Enhance nutrient and oxygen delivery, optimizing brain recovery.

New Project.png

Reduce systemic inflammation, promoting long-term brain health.

Regulating
Neurotransmitter
Balance

Conventional concussion management often focuses on symptom relief rather than addressing the root biological disruptions caused by head trauma.

ConcussionCare+ was specifically designed to:

New Project.png

Optimize brain communication pathways, improving memory and focus.

New Project.png

Enhance brain plasticity, promoting recovery of lost cognitive function.

New Project.png

Protect against long-term neuroinflammation, reducing the risk of post-concussion syndrome (PCS).

New Project.png

Support neurotransmitter stability, improving mood, focus, and emotional well-being.
